Always verify at GOV.UK.

Cars registered before April 2017

Vehicles first registered between March 2001 and March 2017 are taxed under an earlier CO2-based system with different bands and rates. Cars registered before March 2001 are taxed based on engine size. Historic vehicles over 40 years old are exempt from VED.
