Why check MOT history before buying?
A car's MOT history is one of the most revealing documents available to a used car buyer. Each test creates an official record of the vehicle's condition at that point — including every failure reason and advisory note. Sellers cannot alter or remove this data.
Frequent failures may indicate poor maintenance or persistent mechanical problems. Recurring advisories — especially on brakes, tyres or suspension — suggest issues that were noted but not fixed. Gaps in the MOT record may mean the car was off the road, uninsured, or used on a SORN.
The mileage recorded at each test also makes odometer fraud immediately visible. If the mileage drops between tests, or if there are suspicious jumps, CarVouch flags it.
MOT history check — FAQs
DVSA holds records back to approximately 2005. Tests before that date are not in the digital database. For older vehicles, some records may be missing.
Yes — the official DVSA API is free to access, and CarVouch passes that data to you for free. You do not need to create an account or pay anything for the basic MOT history.
Yes. MOT history is public data and can be viewed for any UK-registered vehicle. This is specifically to help used car buyers make informed decisions.
A major defect means the car failed its MOT and must be repaired before it can be used on the road. An advisory is a note that a component is starting to show wear but has not yet failed — it should be monitored and repaired soon.
Not necessarily. An MOT tests a minimum safety standard at a point in time. A car can pass its MOT and still have advisories, high mileage, or a poor maintenance history. Always look at the full history, not just the most recent result.
