Why check for outstanding finance before buying?

When a car is bought on finance, the lender holds legal title until the final payment is made. If the seller has not cleared the agreement, the lender can repossess the vehicle from you — the new keeper — even though you paid for it in good faith.

This is not a theoretical risk. Thousands of UK used-car buyers unknowingly purchase vehicles with outstanding finance every year. The seller pockets your money, defaults on the finance, and the lender traces the car via the DVLA keeper record.

Free checks do not reveal finance. DVLA and DVSA data is public, but finance agreements are held by credit reference agencies (Experian, HPI). Only a paid check that queries those databases can confirm whether finance is clear.

If you buy a car that still has finance outstanding, the lender can legally repossess it from you — even though you paid for it. You could lose both the car and your money, with no automatic right to compensation from the seller.
An outstanding finance check queries the HPI/Experian finance records database. CarVouch's Full Vehicle Check includes Experian finance data, showing the lender name, agreement type, and term if finance is present.
No. Free checks from DVLA and DVSA do not include finance records. Only a paid check that queries Experian or HPI data can reveal outstanding finance agreements.
Yes — a seller can settle the finance on or before the sale. Always insist on seeing proof of settlement (a clearance letter from the lender) and run a final check after collection to confirm the finance marker has been removed.
Yes. CarVouch's Full Vehicle Check (£9.99) includes Experian finance records, the same data used by HPI. If finance is present, the report shows the lender, agreement type, and term.
